 What's TimeSync?

TimeSync Settings window TimeSync is an easy-to-use utility that automatically sets your PC's clock.

TimeSync reads the time from the US government's atomic clock in Boulder, Colorado and automatically adjusts for your time zone and Daylight Saving Time.  TimeSync runs under Windows 9x/ME, NT, 2000 and XP.

TimeSync is 100% ad-free, spyware-free, virus-free and just plain free!

 Installation

To install TimeSync, do the following:
  1. Download timesync.zip (611 Kb) and extract its contents to a new folder, eg: C:\TimeSync.
  2. Create a short-cut to C:\TimeSync\TimeSync.exe.

To uninstall TimeSync, delete the folder C:\TimeSync and any shortcuts you created

 How to use TimeSync

TimeSync is easy to use!  This section describes how to:
  1. Start and stop TimeSync
  2. Modify TimeSync's settings
  3. Manually synchronize your PC's clock

Starting and stopping TimeSync

To start TimeSync, run C:\TimeSync\TimeSync.exe.  TimeSync places an icon in the system tray.  The appearance of the icon reflects TimeSync's state.

System time has been successfully updated
Waiting to perform first synchronization, or
Automatic updating of system time is currently disabled
TimeSync is communicating with the timeserver
TimeSync was unable to set the system time

To stop TimeSync, right-click the system tray icon and select Exit from the popup menu.

Modifying TimeSync's settings

To modify TimeSync's settings, do the following:
  1. Click TimeSync's system tray icon.  The TimeSync Settings window appears.
  2. Change the settings as desired and click OK.

Manually synchronizing your PC's clock

To manually synchronize your PC's clock, right-click TimeSync's system tray icon and select Synchronize from the popup menu.

 Coming soon

TimeSync is under development.  Here's what's coming next (no guarantees of when!):
  • Ability to specify a (prioritized) list of timeservers
  • Ability to view the TimeSync log
  • An installer with uninstall capability
 Known problems

None (yet).

 Release notes

 Version 2.0, released 19 June 2005
New Stuff
  1. Added "Start with Windows" setting.

 1.0 Beta 4, released 1 Jan 2001
New Stuff
  1. The process of checking the remote timeserver has been speeded up.

 1.0 Beta 3, released 24 June 2000
Bug Fixes
  1. TimeSync no longer allows multiple instances of it to be run.  An attempt to run a second instance simply activates the first.

  2. On-demand synchronization (i.e. clicking the Synchronize Now button in the TimeSync window or selecting Synchronize from the system tray icon's popup-menu) would be ignored if the time difference exceeded the amount specified in TimeSync's settings.  On-demand synchronization now always synchronizes the clock.
    (Yong Zhang)

  3. When waiting to perform the first synchronization, the system tray icon would incorrectly display the "System time has been successfully updated" state.
    (Larry Engholm)

 1.0 Beta 2, released 21 June 2000
Bug Fixes
  1. Due to a code optimization bug (i.e. programmer error), TimeSync would sometimes not update the system time.  This has been fixed.

  2. When updating the system time, the status bar's clock would not respond immediately.  Now, all applications are informed of the time change.

  3. If an error occured while communicating with a timeserver, TimeSync would no longer flash its system tray icon when setting the time.  TimeSync's system tray icon now always flashes when the time has successfully been set.

New Stuff
  1. The system tray icon displays an error message in its tooltip if TimeSync is unable to update the system time.

  2. A splash screen is now displayed on startup.  The splash screen can be disabled.

 1.0 Beta 1, released 18 June 2000
  • Initial release
