 History

Campion School was founded on January 20, 1943 by Rev. Fr. Joseph Savall.  It started out on a rental ground at Marine Lines with just 23 students.  Campion is now located at 13 Campion Road, and has hundreds of students.  The school is named after the Jesuit saint, Edmund Campion.  The Jesuits eventually relinquished control over the school, and Kenneth Dyer became the first lay principal in 1986.

Campion was originally divided into three "houses" - Xavier (blue), Britto (red), and Loyola (white).  Later a fourth house, Berchman (yellow), was also added.  The houses were named after St. Francis Xavier, St. John Britto, St. Ignatius Loyola, and St. John Berchman respectively.  Campion's motto, "Gaudium In Veritate" (joy in truth) - is displayed on the school emblem along with the colors of the three original houses.  Berchman's color was taken from the banner below the shield.  The school anthem is called "Campion Calls".

Campion has an excellent academic reputation.  It initially followed the English education system consisting of A-levels and O-levels, before adopting the ISC exams, which eventually evolved into the ICSE format.

Campion also excels in extra-curricular activities.  The school lays equal emphasis in all fields such as sports, debates, elocution, general knowledge, etc.  It believes in the overall development of the student and endeavours to achieve that.

Campion has taken a special effort to teach students to:

  • be unselfish in the service of fellowmen
  • become the agents of the needed social changes in our country
  • be clear and firm in principles and courageous in action
  • become mature, spiritually oriented men of character
  • value and judicially use their freedom
  • strive continually toward excellence in every field

 School Anthem

Campion's school anthem is "Campion Calls".  You can download it here (WMA format, 1.5M).  This rendition is performed, arranged and sung by Dennis Taraporewala.

Campion calls, Campion calls to courage and high chivalry;
Campion calls, Campion calls to share responsibility;
To peace, love, and charity; to honor truth and loyalty;
Campion calls, Campion calls, Campion calls to you and me.

Fair School, thy gracious gifts of mind and soul let me not miss;
We pray that all Thy sons may reach their goal's eternal bliss.
There is a challenge every man must meet who walks by day,
But Campion steers me lest my wandering feet from grace should stray.

Campion calls, Campion calls to courage and high chivalry;
Campion calls, Campion calls to share responsibility;
To peace, love, and charity; to honor truth and loyalty;
Campion calls, Campion calls, Campion calls to you and me.
